Fatal Termination of an Accident at Denaby Main.

Mr. D. Wightman, district coroner, held an inquest at the Masons’ Arms, Doncaster-road, Mexborough, on Wednesday, respecting the death of a miner named John Leake, aged 43.

Mr. J. H. Watson was foreman of the jury, which was composed of Messrs. J. Sutton, J. Thompson, J. Rother, G. Bennett, T. Overment, J. Charlesworth, J. Marsland, V. Lockwood, J. Dykes, B. Wiles, and J. Chipp. Rosa Ann Leake, widow of deceased, was the first witness. She said that on the 16th of March her husband went to his work, and on returning he complained of a pain in his back. He worked up to March 30th, and on May 3rd he was attended by Dr. Twigg.

Joseph Bucknall said that on the 16th March he assisted the deceased to carry some iron rails, when on carrying the third lot he complained that he had hurt his back. Dr. Twigg said he was called in on May 3rd, and found Leake had injured his spinal cord. He gradually got worse, and inflammation of the brain followed. He could not positively state that death was due to natural causes, or whether it was the cause of an accident, though he believed it primarily resulted from the accident.

The jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased had died from inflammation of the spine and brain.
