Greengrocer’s Death at Conisborough

The fatal accident at Conisborough station was the subject of an inquest at Denaby last night.

A Denaby greengrocer, Benjamin Gaukroger (38), of 4, Woodside View, had been to Sheffield early in the morning and had purchased some fish, rabbits, and vegetables, to unload which he went to the other platform in search of a trolley. Returning with the trolley, he was caught by the engine of a Sheffield train, carried for 25 yards, and then thrown, receiving frightful injuries. Another man, who was at the front of the trolley, had a narrow escape.

The stationmaster told the jury he saw the men and realised the danger. He called out to them, and they hesitated for a second and then went on, Gaukroger being caught by the train, the approach of which he had not noticed in the fog.

“Accidental death” was the verdict.
