Fighting at Conisborough

Two miners from Conisborough named Michael Cairns and Fred Uttley were summoned for having committed a breach of the peace by fighting on the Highway at Conisborough on the 4th inst.

PC Jenkinson deposed that at 11 PM he was in company in New Conisborough with PS Horton when he saw the defendants, who were surrounded by a large crowd of people, fighting and making use of very bad language.

After separating them he told them they would be reported.

An order was made upon each defendant to pay the costs.

Threats at Conisborough

A Conisborough by-workman named Frank Singleton, was summoned by John Day, steward of the Castle Workingman’s Club, for having used threats towards him at that place on 21 October.

Mr Baddiley prosecuted and the defendant pleaded guilty.

The complainant said he was the steward of the Castle Club, and the defendant had use of threats complained of on 21 October and 2 November on the club premises.

All persons were present when defendant use of threats. He only asked for the defendant to be bound over, for in consequence of his conduct the committee of the club had suspended him for 12 months.

The defendant said that the dispute arose of the complainant refusing to allow him to use the ivory billiard balls.

The Bench bound the defendant over in the sum of £5 to keep the peace for six months.
