Fire
A fire occurred at the Conisboro’ Woodworking Company’s premises in Low Road on Sunday morning. The roof and floor of the gas retort house were destroyed, but the retort escaped damage.
It is conjectured that the outbreak was caused through a spark falling on to sawdust and shavings. The alarm was raised by John Carter, who lives in a bungalow in the yard of the mill, by F. E. Hodgson, who lives on Low Road, and by M. J. Badger, of Firbeck Street, who saw the smoke and flames from the shed.
The Conisboro’ Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene, in a lorry turned out expeditiously by Messrs. Appleyard and Lumb. Fortunately there was no wind, for the retort shed is only twenty yards from a big store of wood. The loss is covered by insurance.
