Firth College Free Lectures

On Monday Mr L.T.O’Shea, B.S.C. opened the series of lectures on the Chemistry of Coal Mining at the New Schools, Denaby Main to an audience consisting of 31 men and boys

Mr WH Chambers, general manager of the mine, acted as chairman, and in his opening remarks welcomed the lecturer, and thanked the County Council and Firth College giving the workers at Denaby opportunities he had not had in his younger days. He regretted to see so few to take advantage of the instruction gratuitously given, but no doubt the cause was to be found in the most inclement weather then prevailing

Mr O’Shea then proceeded with his opening “popular” lecture, proving his ability to instruct in the A.B.C. of chemistry, and in plain and simple language carefully thought out, and by means of most successful experiments, interested a small audience, and kept their attention thoroughly during the one and half hours his remarks lasted.

It is to be hoped that the next nine lectures will see a much increased attendance, so proving that Denaby is not behind in the thirst for knowledge. Boys are especially invited to attend. These lecture be prepared at great trouble, and last year the attendances were much higher. To have a continuance of the lectures more support must be given. The proportion of certificate won last bed very favourably with those given by other centres. All who can should attend – both male and female – and join the class after the lecture.
