February 1929

Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Thursday 14 February 1929

Five-Shilling Journeys.

Officials’ Allowances Opposed at Conisborough.

At the meeting of the Conisborough Urban Council last night, Mr. H. Gillott moved that a minute authorising the rate-collector and his assistant to charge 5s. for each journey to Doncaster on Council business be rescinded, and that the collector be allowed 2s. and fares.

The collector, Mr. J. Hill, said he was legally entitled to the allowance that had been made.

Mr. E. Collins said that if the rate-collector got 5s., it was only fair that the assistant should receive the same amount.

Mr. Gillott’s motion was rejected.

The Council decided to make application for sanction to borrow £10,000 for the erection by direct labour of 22 houses on the Daylands site.

A resolution expressing appreciation of the services of Mr. H. Crowther, hon. librarian, who is leaving the district, was passed.
