Flying  Visit

A flying visit to England and France for a tour of various glass making centres and conferences has just left time for Mr. Harold Bateson to call in at Conisbrough, his home-town.

Mr. Bateson is general manager of the Union Glass Company, in Talana, Natal, South Africa, and he arrived in London by plane at the beginning of the month. For a week he was attending a meeting of the International Commission on Glass in Paris, and visits to London, Sheffield and Lancashire left time for two brief week-ends in Conisbrough with his sister, Mrs. E. B. Greathead, and brother, Mr. K. Bateson, both of Park Road.

He returned to South Africa by air yesterday. Conisbrough-born, Mr. Bateson worked at Kilner Brothers’ glassworks before going out to South Africa in 1936. He was back in England in 1946, and returned to Natal three years later.
