Folk Music Class is a New Idea

“Sir” to hundreds of children at Conisbrough Northcliffe high school during the day, English master, Mr John Millington, is in the evening a folksinger who is leading the field by running a novel form of evening class.

Mr Millington, of Lorna Road, Mexborough, is a lecturer in folk music and through the Rockingham Institute of Further Education he has a class at Wath on Fridays and a class at Conisbrough Northcliffe High School on Thursdays. Another may be arranged for Rawmarsh and Parkgate.

The course traces the history of folk music, Mr Millington giving illustrations accompanied by guitar. He started focusing clear when with the St George’s Scout troop, Mexborough and is interest pollution when he went to St John’s College York where he helped form a Folk Music Society.

He has written over half a dozen songs of his own.

Over the years he has picked up many songs until now is repertoire is quite extensive. Yet collecting many from for music circles and the other also toured Scotland.
