Following the Thunderstorm
Scenes reminiscent of Bank Holiday, 1922, were witnessed in the vicinity of The Brook on Wednesday afternoon.
During the afternoon, following the thunderstorm, the waters rose rapidly, and owners of pigs and fowls housed along the banks had to wade through the floods to rescue their live stock. Some hens were lost through drowning and being washed away.
The children thoroughly enjoyed catching the flotsam and jetsam which came down on the tide, but one youngster, who fell in and was smartly rescued by a young man, did not seem to appreciate the laughter his appearance caused.
A portion of Station Road was under water, but the Council roadmen were busy all over the lower regions clearing the drains, and water was not allowed long to accumulate on the road surfaces.
A portion of the works of the Conisborough Motor Company was flooded, and Highways Construction, Ltd., had to board up their opening on to The Brook to prevent some of the road-making material being washed away.
