Conisborough Stationmaster’s Story of Assault.

On Saturday, at the West Riding Court, Doncaster. Ernest Robinson, labourer, Swinton was summoned for assaulting Charles Peter Richards, stationmaster, Conisborough, on the 8th inst.

Mr. Baddeley defended.

Complainant found defendant asleep in a third class compartment He roused him and took him on to the platform, where he tried to get an explanation from him, but failed.

The man became excited, and, pulling off his coat, struck the complainant in the mouth.

Defendant, it was declared, was recovering from the effects of drink, and on the Monday he wanted to settle the case.

Cross-examined, complainant said defendant found his ticket after a police-constable had been summoned, and the constable said he was “not quite drunk enough to lock up.”

In defence it was alleged that defendant received great provocation and was subjected unnecessary amount of violence.

A fine of 20s. and costs was imposed.
