Central figure of this four generations picture is Mrs Sarah Martha Oldfield, of 106, Damon’s Avenue, 80-year-old mother of Coun. George Oldfield (right) of the same address.

Also in this picture are Mrs Oldfield’s eldest grandson, Mr George Oldfield, formerly of Fitzwilliam Avenue, Conanby, and now of Springwell Lane, Doncaster and her eight-year-old great-grandson, Brian of Springwell Lane.

Mrs Oldfield is a remarkable woman. Every morning she is up at six, and everyday journeys out somewhere into the Don and Dearne district. Either to Mexborough, Swinton, Wath or Denaby.

When the morning paper arrives she immediately looks for the days “weather tip.”

Mrs Oldfield, whose husband, Mr George Oldfield, died eight years ago, previously resided at Rose Cottage, Roman Terrace, and altogether she has lived in Yorkshire 47 years.

She is a native of Appleby (Lincolnshire) and has had seven sons, all of who are miners, and three daughters of whom eight are living. All the sons served their King and country, five in the Great War and two in this last war. Of the five great War veterans two, Coun Oldfield and the late Mr Walter Oldfield, gained the M. M. Coun. Oldfield attaining the rank of sergeant major in the York and Lancaster Regiment in the Great War and that of First Lieutenant in the Home Guard in this war. Mrs Oldfield has 21 grandchildren living and 15 great grandchildren.

Councillor Oldfield who has served on the Urban Council 13 years, has worked at Cadeby Main colliery for 20 years and was previously at Manvers Main. His son (left), who is now 35, worked at Cadeby for 19 years before going to Markham Main Colliery, Armthorpe, 12 months ago.
