Fourteen Candidates

Who’s Who in To-morrow’s Council Contests

Fourteen candidates will go to the poll to-morrow (Saturday) in the 11 Urban Council elections at Mexborough, Conisbrough and Swinton. There will be three contests each at Mexborough and Conisbrough and one at Swinton. Polling will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Labour will defend in six of the fights and attack in one—at Conisbrough.

Conisbrough

East Ward

Coun. H. S. Peet (Ratepayers): native of this ward, where he has lived all his life. Elected to the Council three years ago at his first attempt. Chairman of Conisbrough Cricket Club and Denaby United Supporters’ Club and treasurer of Conisbrough Working Man’s Cooperative Society.

Mr. R. Scurfield (Lab.): His first Council election. Senior science master at the Sir Percy Jackson Grammar School, Woodlands. Has resided in Conisbrough for about three years. A native of Durham. Lives at 1 Drakehead Lane. Conisbrough.

North Ward

Mr. R. B. Cutts (Ratepayers): Was born in Denaby and moved to Conisbrough at an early age. Apart from his 6i years with the R.A.F during the war on air-crew and ground staff duties, Mr. Cutts has lived in Conisbrough all his life. Operational flying duties took him to Gibraltar and North Africa and he has over 1,000 hours flying to his credit. An active official of the Conisbrough British Legion branch, vice-chairman of the British Legion Club. Conisbrough, a member’ of the Parochial Church Council and of Conisbrough Cricket Club committee.

Coun. T. Davey (Lab.): Was first elected to the Council in April 1946, in the first post-war elections as an Independent Labour candidate, but subsequently joined the Labour Party and was returned unopposed three years ago. Now resides in Conisbrough, but resided in the North Ward for many years. Chairman of the Allotments Committee and formerly chairman of the Library Committee

West Ward

Coun. R. H. Shephard (Lab.): Member of a ‘well-known Denaby family. Has been a member of the Urban Council since 1931. Fights his first election since 1936. Former chairman of the local authority and committee chairman. President, Denaby N.U.M. branch and former secretary – manager of Dtaiaay United Football Club.

Mr. F. White (Ind.): has worked in the coal industry all his life, initially as a weigh office clerk then as wages clerk at Denaby and Cadeby Main Collieries and since the inception of the N.C.B. has been secretary and administrative clerk to the Scientific Department.

Mexborough

Central Ward

Coun. K. Lee (Lab.): This will be his first fight in this Ward Elected four years ago in the North Ward. Has served or all the standing committees of the Council and is present chairman of the Housing Committee Chairman of Mex-borough branch of the A.S.L.E.F. and delegate to the Trades Council and secretary of Mexborough W.E.A.

Mr. H. Dews (Cons.): Has been a chemist in Mexborough for 17 years. Native of Batley. During the war he served in the Royal Ordnance Corps and the Medical Corps. A member of Mexborough Chamber of Trade and a bachelor.

East Ward

Coun, S. Stubbs (Lab.): Member of Council five years, and for the past four years chairman of the Library Committee. He has been a checkweighman at Denaby pit or 14 years. Member of the Mexborough Primary School Managers, Mex borough Hospital Library Committee and Denaby Main Colliery 1 Consultative Committee.

Mr. W. D. Thompson (Cons.): Aged 31. Conveyor fitter of Harlington Road. Surface representative for Transport and General Workers at Denaby Main Colliery. Has attended courses on local government. An old student of Schofield Technical College, Mexborough

Adwick Road

Coun. W. A. Bradshaw (Lab.) Chairman of Mexborough Entertainments Committee Member of the Council for four years Trustee of Mexborough Almshouses. Keen trade unionist and treasurer of the Dearne Valley Divisional Labour Party. Member of Sheffield and South Yorkshire Advisory Committee of the National Assistance Board.

Mr. G. E. Whitehead (Cons.): A railway timekeeper, of Washington Street Mexborough. Aged 41. Until 1920 he was a fireman, but was disabled in an accident

Swinton

Bridge Ward

Coun. A. H. Marriott (Lab.): Manvers N U.M. branch nominee. Member of Swinton Local Labour Party for 15 years and an Executive Committee member. Membership of Dearne Valley Divisional Labour Party Management Committee. Chairman of Swinton Council Allotments Committee and a member of Swinton Food Comittee and Food Enforcement Sub-Comittee.

Mr. C. D. Lester (Ind. Lab.): strong trades unionist. Roman Terrace man. but has resided in Swirl-on 11 years. Aged 36. Employed at Doncaster Plant Works and member of the A.E.U. He is a committee member of Swinton Bridge Parent-Teacher Association. Is married and has two children.
