Gambling at Conisborough

Robert May, miner, Daniel Edwards, pony driver and George Beevers, pony driver, all of Conisborough, and Wm. Lawley, pony driver and Robert Duncan Graham, pony driver, of Denaby, were charged with having gambled at Conisborough on Nov. 22d.

P.c. Hannan deposed that at four p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22nd. he was on duty on the footpath near Messrs. Kilmer’s glassworks and saw the five defendants playing pitch and toss. He watched three games in an interval of five minutes and saw the coins pass each time. The lads all ran on seeing him. He caught Beavers, and ascertained the names of the rest.

Beavers and Lawley appeared in answer to the summons and had to pay 10s. including costs; the other defendants were represented by relatives and they had to pay 12s 6s.

All pleaded guilty.
