Gambling at Conisbro’ and Bolton: An Ingenious Defence.

On Saturday, at the Doncaster West Riding Police Court, John Jones, collier, Denaby, for playing at pitch and toss with a party of sixty others, some of whom had been already dealt with, was fined 20s., including costs.

Wm. Baker, Elijah Earnshaw, John Walton, Jonathan Swallow, Herbert Bean, and Levi Harrison, colliers, of Bolton-on-Dearne, and Wm. Davison, collier, Little Houghton, for playing at pitch and toss at Bolton, were each ordered to pay 17s., including costs.

The defence in this case was that one of the party was a soldier, who had just returned from foreign shores, and had brought a number of coins, which were being examined.

The defence, though ingenious, was useless.
