Gaming with Coins at Conisbro

Richard Marsden, George Ward, Thomas Walker, William Handley, Joseph Brammer, pony driver, New Conisbro, were summoned for gaming with coins at Conisbrough on 30 June.

Only defendant Brammer appeared and he pleaded not guilty.

PC Richardson said that at 5:30 PM on Sunday the third inst, he was on duty at Conisbrough we saw all the five boys playing at a game called tossing with coins. He saw money change hands several times. He watched them for some time and made a rush, and caught Handley. He got the names of the others who ran away, and told them they would be reported.

PC Richardson Barnett corroborated.

Brammer went into the witness box and give evidence on his own behalf, and stated he was sat on the doorstep and was not gambling at all.

The magistrates fined all the defendants five shillings and 6/6 the costs.
