Gas Lights for Conisbrough

Main Road to be Illuminated

Modified street lighting by gas from Brook square, Conisbrough, to the Mexborough boundary at Denaby is to be provided as soon as possible.  This decision was taken at a special meeting of Conisbrough U.D.C., following a special meeting of the Sanitary and Highways Committee to receive a report submitted by the Surveyor (Mr. H. Thirlwall) last night.

The resolution to light the streets by gas, which was moved by the Chairman, Coun. G. Oldfield, and carried, was opposed by an amendment, moved by Coun. J. T. E. Collins, that the lighting should be by electricity and that existing gas lamps should be used until electric lamps could be installed – about eight weeks.  Coun. R. H. Shephard seconded the amendment.

Coun. A. M. Carlin, seconding the resolution, said he dd not think the time was opportune to spend money in electric lighting.  They could

A 4d rate would have to be levied, said Coun. D. The resolution was carried by eight votes to two
