A glorious day for Denaby parish church garden party

Busy making arrangements for serving teas at Denaby Parish Church annual garden party yesterday was one of the churches oldest members, 70-year-old Mrs. Carrie Wathey, of Tickhill Street. Mrs. Wathey, a native of the village, has been a member of the church since she was a child. She has “done her bit” in the Sunday school and the other societies.

As in previous years she took her turn with the teas and later helped to wash up. Business was brisk at every stall, and, as the vicar, the Rev. A. V. Roebuck, so aptly put it, “the weather is ideal for an occasion like this. The good Lord has answered our prayers.”

The party was opened by a “good friend of the church,” Mrs. E. Dabbs. Of Conisbrough. She was accompanied by her husband.

Mrs. Dabbs hoped everyone would spend freely as proceeds were for the church’s interior renovation and decoration fund. She paid tribute to the work of the vicar and to devoted efforts of the organisers and helpers. Mrs. Dabbs was presented with a bunch of red carnations by a member of the Sunday school, Miss Jennifer Bernadette. The opener was thanked by the vicar’s warden, Mr E. Sheldrake.

Organising work was carried out by members of the Church Council and the vicar. It was the first time the event had been outdoors for four years.
