Golden Wedding – Mr & Mrs Platts
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Platts, 13 Lorna Road, Mexborough, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Monday evening by entertaining 50 guests in St. Aidan’s Hall, Mexborough.
Mr. and Mrs. Platts were married in Conisbrough on January 29th, 1884, by Rev. George Wood, Vicar. They are both natives of Conisborough, but have resided in Mexborough over 40 years. On leaving school at the age of eight, Mr. Platts worked on a Clifton farm up to the age of eleven, afterwards at Conisborough brick yard. At the age of thirteen he went to Denaby Main colliery where he became a locomotive driver and at 17, he found work on the old South Yorkshire Railway (now L.N.E.). When he retired seven years ago, he was in charge of No. 2 signal-box at Mexborough.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Platts, of Conisborough, celebrated their golden wedding on December 3rd, 1905. Mr. Thomas Platts was also employed at the Conisborough Brick Works in his youth and later at Denaby Main Colliery.
Mr. and Mrs. Platts are ardent workers for the Trinity (Wesleyan) Methodist Church at Mexborough. Mr. Platts having been associated with the Wesleyan body throughout his life. Before her marriage, Mrs. Platts attended the Conisborough Parish Church. Mr. Platts is an enthusiastic gardener and last year won the second prize in the Mexborough U.D.C. allotment competition.
Mrs. Platts is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Morley of Conisboro’ Mr. and Mrs. Platts have four children, one son and three daughters. At the party the company was entertained by Mr. A. Platts’ concert party.
