This Game will hearten the United.

Goole Town 3 Denaby United 2

For a couple of Denaby’s players  the Goole Town – Denaby United match on Saturday was their first game with the club. For another three, their second – and all the signs are that if they are kept together the team may be able to pull United out of the rut they have fallen into.

Goole were third from the top of the Midland League before Saturday’s game, but there was little to choose between the two sides for the great majority of the 90 minutes.

Denaby opened brightly but against the run of play. Goole went ahead after 7 min, Powell side footing in a pass from Duncan which Bollwell seemed to think was going wide.

Denaby, despite the handicap of having too great a gap between defence and attack, kept up the standard they had set themselves and after 21 min drew level – a shot from Smith been turned into his own net by Goole full-back Patterson.

Moments later they almost went ahead, centre forward Wright, making his debut, managed to get a shot in – from a scramble – which went just wide of the post – and then headed a pass wide.

The more Goole tried to overcome the opposition the more mistakes they made, missing with at least three shots which should have landed in the back of the net.

Newcomers shine.

Although it became scrappy towards the end, the second half was much like the first, with play switching from end to end in a tough struggle. David Whitakers shot skimming the bar a couple of times and in defence, the other new man, Hinton, stood his ground magnificently, with Wroe putting on another powerful display.

Goole went ahead again after 60 min through Barmby, but from the restart Denaby went straight upfield for  Wright to equalise, and the visitors became the first team to score more than one goal against school on their own ground this season.

The match could have gone either way in the last 20 min. As it was, without any slackening up by Denaby, it went to Cool, Powell thumping home a close range shot from Barmby’s pass 7 minutes from the end
