Enlisted Under Age

Eighteen-year-old Pte. Bernard Goulding, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas Goulding of 4, Ferry Terrace, Conisborough, is carrying on a fine family military tradition – and actually enlisted “under age” to do so!

This former haulage hand at Cadeby Main Colliery has been in the Royal Scots since last May and is stationed in the North. Barnard´s father also served in the Great War, and his grandfather, the late Mr. William Goulding, who died three years ago at the age of 76, was in the Boer War.

Mr. J.T. Goulding was a lance-corporal in the Northumberland Fusiliers and served for two years. The grandfather had the experience of being torpedoed while on his way home, but was saved and lived to recount many of his exciting times.
