Corpl. Joseph Sheldrake.
Corpl. Joseph Sheldrake, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Sheldrake, 4, Alexandra Buildings, Denaby has been stationed with his regiment (the 2nd K.O Y.L.I.) at Peshawar. India, for six years. He is a regular reader of the “South Yorkshire Times” which is sent to him each week by his parents.
We congratulate him on his recent successes. During the time he has been away he has won 16 cups, 4 gold medals and a battalion belt for boxing and running. At a recent athletic meeting he won the battalion gold medal awarded the competitor who scored the highest number of points during the meeting.
An extract from a report states, “Corpl. Sheldrake put up a fine performance by winning the 100 yards, 220 and 440, and taking second place in the 880.” He won the semi-final at boxing between the 2nd K.0.Y.L.1. and 2nd Essex.
A report says, “L/Corpl. Sheldrake boxed a nice style and used a good straight left.” His many friends in Denaby are pleased to hear of his good luck and wish him continued success.
