Heavy Penalties for Carelessness at the Denaby Main Colliery

David Morgan, aged 18, pleaded guilty to riding on corves in the Denaby Main Colliery on December 3rd.

Mr. Rhodes prosecuted, and asked the Bench to do something to stop that class of offences.

That was the third consecutive Monday they had been there to prosecute on similar charges, and it was only a few weeks ago that a lad was found dead in the colliery and nothing to account for his death except that he had been riding on a tram.

Fined 25s., including costs, or one month’s imprisonment.

Mr. Rhodes also prosecuted a clipper named Joseph Leem for a similar offence in the same colliery on November 14th.

The defence was that the youth was obeying the instructions of the deputy.

Fined 25s., including costs.
