Her Beauty Prize goes to Parents

A 24 year old Denaby girl who was entered from a beauty contest by a practical joke, won the top prize which she has passed on to her parents.

Rosemary Conlon, an air hostess with BKS airlines, had just completed a 10 hour shift in the air when she reached the Leeds and Bradford airport end of season dance, and found that she had been entered for the beauty competition.

Unprepared

Although she was completely unprepared, she agreed to take part and was elected “Miss Leeds and Bradford airport” in the face of stiff opposition, including an ex-Bluebell girl.

She was so delighted that she rushed home to her parents at 137, Tickhill Street, Denaby Main, and presented her mother, Mrs Mary Conlon, with the prize voucher from a holiday in Palma, Majorca.

“I was so surprised at first, and I thought she must have one in a raffle or something,” said Mrs Conlon.

Until two years ago, Rosemary worked at the Kilnhurst works of John Baker and Bessemer limited, but when they closed she applied for a job as an air hostess, and took the air Ministry examinations.

On posters

Earlier this year, Rosemary was chosen to advertise B.K.S., and now her full-length picture appears on the airlines brochures, and on six-foot high posters at major air terminals.

“Rosemary goes to so many places in the course of her work that she thought that we would more greatly appreciate the trip to Majorca,” said Mrs Conlon, she and her husband, Mr Matthew Conlon, a metal machinist at Doncaster Railway plan, will probably take the holiday early next year.
