Denaby Soldier’s Self Sacrifice
Corporal H Higgins
(York and Lancs)
70 Tickhill Street, Denaby main is home on leave having arrived straight from hospital in France when he has been treated for a twisted knee.
While in hospital a wounded officer (second Lieut. Vernon), was brought in and his life was despaired off.
Corporal Higgins, however, voluntary submitted to a bloodletting operation, and the blood was transfused into the young officer, whose life was thereby saved.
Corporal Higgins parents received no intimation of this incident from their son, and first learned on it in grateful letters received from second lieutenant Vernon’s parents who live in North Finchley and from the Reverent John Russell also from North Finchley, a great friend of the Vernon’s.
Mr and Mrs Higgins have lost one son in the war, Private D Higgins, who was killed a year ago.
