Holiday Pay for Miners

About £6000 extra wages were taken home by about 5,000 miners at Denaby and Cadeby Main Collieries yesterday, when they drew their first pay under the miners’ holiday with pay scheme.

Denaby and Cadeby employees are taking their holidays under the scheme on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, and will the first men in the Don Valley area to benefit under the concession.

The wages drawn varied from 10s. for to 30s for married mineworkers and single men of 22 years and over, but all the miners did not draw the full amount, as the question or absenteeism is taken into account in assessing the amount of pay due.

The miners are the two pits will, in fact, as a full week off, for it has been announced that the collieries will “play” for the remainder of the week.

Quite a number of families will be taking their first seaside holiday for some years, and Blackpool. Cleethorpes and Bridlington are the popular choice.

The payment under the scheme was also made men and boys employed at Thurcrolt Main Colliery yesterday.

Payments varied and the same conditions apply as for Denaby.
