Horses Astray

George Wagstaff, Carter, Conisborough, was summoned for allowing his two horses to stray in a public thoroughfare at Conisborough on 8th June.

P.c. Evans swore that on the date in question he was in Denaby Road, and there came across the defendants to horses lying in the middle of the road.

Witness turned them into the field from which they had escaped and interviewed the defendant telling him of his intention to report him. Witness had before cautioned the man about the horses.
The defendant in defence said two fresh horses have been put into the field with them and these had driven out the horses in question.

Sgt ambler corroborated. The place in which the horses had been grazing was not a field at all but some ground adjoining some freshly erected houses. The defendant had no right there.
The bench imposed a fine of 2 shillings for each horse, and 8 shillings costs.
