How the Collier “Touched” the Pony.
Yesterday, at the Rotherham West Riding Police Court, Edward Baldwin, of Mexborough, a jinnier at the Denaby Main Colliery, was summoned for cruelty to a pony at the Denaby Colliery.
Mr. H. H. Hickmott who prosecuted, stated that on Marchch 3 a brattice man named Lawrence was going up the Jinny, when he heard a noise of kicking about 20 yards away, and saw a pony knocking about.
He went to see what was wrong, and found the following attached two full corves, the wheels of which were “locked,” although it was on the level. The pony was injured about one of hind legs the skin being knocked off; so Lawrence made inquiries and was told the defendant had kicked the animal. The pony had not been to work since.
Mr. Hattersley, of Mexborough, defended, denied that Baldwin kicked the pony, but admitted he touched one of its forelegs with his foot.
A fine of 10s and costs was imposed.
