Hull and the Yorkshire Coal Trade

As we are now in the midst of what is generally the busiest season of the Yorkshire steam coal trade, it may be interesting to make a few comments upon the actual business done by the Yorkshire collieries with Hull.

The information is obtained from official sources, and it is remarkable that, notwithstanding the depression now hanging over the steam coal trade, the quantity sent to Hull is but little lower than that sent during the corresponding period of last year.

For instance, the tonnage of coal sent into Hull during the seven months ending July, 1881, was 641,754 tons, as against 651,982 tons for the same period of 1880.

The quantity sent during last month compares very favourably with that sent for the corresponding period of 1880, the actual figures being 112,902 and 98,620 tons respectively.

The greatest tonnage sent from any one colliery was 14,980 tons from Denaby Main, of which 9,536 was sent by river and 5,444 by rail.

Next on the list come Whitwood Colliery with 9,385 tons; Allerton Main, 8,538; West Riding and Silkstone, 8,431; Frystone, 5,099, all of which are in the West Yorkshire district and assisted by the favourable rate on the North-Eastern.

Manvers Main sent 6,353 tons; Shireoaks, 4,964; Elsecar, 4,772; Monk Bretton, 2,888; Carlton Main, 2,667; Thrybergh Hall, 2,620; Edmunds Main, 2,512; Aldwarke Main, 2,456; Cortonwood, 2,376; Roundwood, 2,316; Wharncliffe Silkstone, 2,204; Mitchell Main, 1,806; Monckton Main, 1,592; Kiveton Park, 1,444; Lundhill, 1,388; and Pindar Oaks, 1,316 tons.

Although the tonnage sent to Hull during the seven months ending July, 1881, is greater than that sent during the corresponding period of 1880, the quantity exported during the past seven months compares unfavourably with the tonnage exported for the same period of 1880, the quantities being 278,894 and 302,583 tons respectively.

A marked increase has taken place in the quantity exported to America during the past seven months, the tonnage being 88,155, as against 1,428 for the corresponding period of 1880.

Most of the other countries show a marked decrease.

During last month North Russia took 16,938 tons, Sweden and Norway, 14,380, Holland 6,976, Germany 5,950, America 5,203, South Russia 4,778, Denmark 2,086, Italy 1,340, France 1,259, South Africa 470, Portugal 217, Jersey and Guernsey 155, and Spain 79 tons.

The total quantity exported during July was 59,776 tons as against 48,888 tons during the corresponding period of 1880.
