Illegal Employment
James Braithwaite, farmer, Denaby, was charged with having illegally employed a boy aged 12 years.
The defendant admitted the offence, but said the schoolmistress would not have the youth, and he took him to keep him out of mischief (laughter).
The Chairman (Mr. Baines) said, unfortunately, he had broken the law and would have to pay. He was fined 15s., including costs.
Hy. Austwick, carter, Bourne, was summoned for using an unfit horse. On the morning of the 31st May Supt. Blake met the defendant near Bentley. He was driving a horse “which was nearly all skin and bone,” and was so lame on one of the feet that it had to travel on three legs.
The defendant was fined 40s., or 14 days’ imprisonment.
