Illegal Pawning At Denaby

Phoebe Hill, married woman, of Denaby, was charged with pawning a handkerchief, the property of Mary Jane Brown, on July 15th, without her authority.

It appears that the complainant has been lodging with the prisoner for some time. About three weeks ago she missed a handkerchief from behind, one of the doors, she suspected prisoner of taking it, and asked her what she had done with it.

Prisoner replied that it was all right. She then went down to the pawn shop and found the handkerchief pledged there. The pawnbroker told her that Hill had brought it.

Sergeant Brown said he went down to the pawnshop and in prisoner’s presence asked the assistant if Hill had pawned that, and the assistant said ‘yes.’

Prisoner said complainant had pawned the article herself, and the pawnbroker would bear her out in that statement. Prisoner now asked for the case to be adjourned for a week to enable the pawnbroker to attend. He had promised to come that day but did not put in an appearance. This was granted.
