Mr BH Pickering, for the last four years agent to the Denaby and Cadeby collieries, and assistant general manager of the Maltby colliery, was yesterday appointed President of the Midland Institute of Mining Engineers.

He has been a member of that body for 30 years, and for the past few years a member of the Council and a representative of the Council of the Institute of Miley Engineers.

Mr Pickering entered the mining industry 1905, under the late WH Chambers, at Denaby and Cadeby, and in 1911 became manager of Wath Main Colliery, where, with exception of war service from 1915 to 1919, he remained until 1920.

Then he was appointed manager of the Manton Colliery, near Worksop, before his appointment in 1923 as agent to Maltby and Rossington Collieries.

Four years ago he was appointed to his present position.

Mr Pickering resides at Stone Grange, Maltby, and in June was appointed J.P. for the Rotherham West Riding area.

He is a member of the South Yorkshire district of the Miner’s Welfare Committee.
