34th Minute Goal
Gave Denaby Their Chance
Half-Time Lead Consolidated
Denaby Utd. 5, Newark T. 2
Ardon´s goal, after 34 minutes of this game at Tickhill Square on Saturday, gave Denaby the lead for the first time in a tit-for-tat first half. And later they consolidated their advantage into victory. Both Newark´s goals were, in a way, rather lucky goals. Gibbs had only just had time to strike the cross-bar in an early raid when RILEY pushed the ball into the Denaby net. This was after four minutes, and it was not until five minutes later that a centre from the right wing gave PADGETT the opportunity to equalise.
There was an interval of 14 minutes before Newark took the lead again, and this time we saw DENNETT and Parr, J., going up for the ball together on Gibson´s doorstep as the goalkeeper attempted to fist the ball away. The Newark leader headed the ball onto the underside of the bar, however, and it fell down almost vertically, and in spite of Gibson´s frantic efforts to get to it with one outstretched hand, it bounced over the line.
In The Lead
PADGETT equalised once more, seven minutes later, and after 34 minutes ARDRON gave Denaby the lead.
This they held at half-time, and after 17 minutes of the second half PADGETT scored the third of his hat-trick with a lovely goal taken on the run. After 26 minutes Gibbs made the opening for the Denaby leader´s fourth. It was not a particularly exciting game.
The state of the ground had a lot to do with it. Padgett was as often in the picture as the scoring s suggests. He shot often and hard. The remaining Denaby forwards also played an equal share in their success and the defence had a good day.
A feature of the game was the fine work of the Newark goalkeeper, whose normal position is actually, full-back!
