Denaby Humiliated
South Kirkby´s Easy Victory
Denaby 78 South Kirkby 102 for 7
South Kirkby descended on Denaby on Saturday like a hurricane.
In glorious weather Denaby took first knock, and were soon in trouble, for three wickets went cheap. Greenwood and Foster opened to the bowling of Eatock and Russell. Only half a dozen runs were scored before Foster was caught by Bidmead. George Worthington came in to meet with a similar fate, and another of Denaby´s best bats went out without scoring, with the total at 7 for 2.
The rot was temporarily checked when Tibbles came in after Greenwood had been caught l.b.w., and the third wicket had fallen for 8, but Ted Tibbles gave a chance to Russell when he had scored 11, and Russell took it. Four wickets down for 17 runs. Soar, who followed, was another victim for Russell, retiring without scoring. For the sixth wicket, however, something like a stand was made, and “Billy” Narraway began to knock up a few. He was joined by Shoosmith, and runs came faster during this partnership that at any stage of the innings.
South Kirkby effected a change of bowling, Clifford Nuttall coming on for Eatock. The change was justified, for Nuttall got Narraway who had scored 18. Shoosmith had compiled the same total when he was caught by Eatock, and, with eight wickets down, the score had reached 77. Sam Kennedy and Soar were soon parted, and only one more run went on for the ninth wicket. The last man in, E. Wathey, was clean bowled by Russell, and the whole side was out for 78. Eatock and Russell took four wickets apiece, the former for 34 and the latter´s costing 38.
South Kirkby set about their task with a good deal of complacency. Clem Hobson and J. Porter started the innings and the former treated the crowd to a delightful display of stylish batting, keeping his wicket until the winning hit had been made, and being bowled by Worthington when he was well set and within half a dozen runs of his half-century.
The visitors did not begin too brilliantly, for the first wicket produced but 13 runs. However, 46 runs were on the board for the second. Bidmead made a stand for 8, and Eatock scored a fairly quick 10 before Worthington caught him. Shoosmith and Robinson opened the bowling, but a change was soon effected, their places being taken by Greenwood and Kennedy. The third wicket went for 62, and the fourth was down at 68. Ellam opened his innings with a boundary, and was then stumped. When Russell joined Hobson runs came faster, and the score was carried by bright batting to 94 for the loss of the next wicket. Russell made the winning hit.
After the game was won three more wickets went pretty cheaply. Hobson was bowled soon after the winning stroke. The score was carried to 102 for 7, when stumps were drawn. Worthington came out with the best figures, 3 for 21; Greenwood 3 for 30, Shoosmith 1 for 13. Scores:-
