Late-season Revival Continues

Denaby United 3 Consett 0

Completing one of four successive victories, Denaby United gave an enterprising display in defeating north-eastern rivals, Consett 3-0 at Tickhill Square on Saturday

In the opening stages the visitors were the more cultured team, but were quickly on the defensive against the fast-moving Denaby forwards Denaby went into the lead in the eighth minute when leading goalscorer, Swaby, punished slack covering and drove home from an oblique angle. The tightly knit home defence with Miller outstanding proved an effective combination as Consett attempted to move into shooting range.

Denaby increased their lead after 90 minutes through a splendid goal by Swaby. Which brought his season’s tally to 30. The burly home centre forward fastened on to a pass from Bainbridge and fired into the net past the advanced keeper.

Penalty appeal

Strong appeals for a penalty by Consett were ignored by the referee when a header by Mikael appeared to be handled my right half, Lawley. Bainbridge added a third goal for Denaby almost on the interval. Denaby fully Merited their handsome lead and wing halves. Lawley and Friel were the men behind this enterprise in the first half display.

Prompted by wing half Marsden. Consett pressed hard on the resumption and Denaby keeper, Smethurst, was constantly in action. A flick header by McHale spun narrowly wide.

Denaby remained cool under pressure, but conceded a penalty in the closing stages. Spedding drove wide from the spot.

Swaby finished the game limping badly on the wing after sustaining a groin injury midway through the half. Consett’s elaborate approach work was in marked contrast to the long passing game adopted by Denaby, and on the evidence of this game, the home club seemed certain to continue their late-season revival and gain a more satisfactory league position.
