Lay Reader’s Death
The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Percy Chipp, of 12, Morton Road, Mexborough, a well-known member of the Parish Church and St. George’s Church. He was 62.
Mr. Chipp, who for more than ten years had served in the parish as an honorary lay-reader, was also well known at other churches in the district, at which he had assisted. He was employed at Denaby Main Colliery.
Mr. Chipp had devoted virtually all his leisure time for many years to the work of the Church. He was for many years secretary of the Sunday School at St. George’s Church, retiring in 1937 through ill health, and pressure of other duties. His connection with St. George’s dated right back to the founding of the church.
Mr. Chipp had over 50 years’ service as a chorister to his credit and over 40 years in the Sunday School, where he had been scholar, secretary, and superintendent, holding the last-named position for about 15 years. The funeral takes place at Mexborough on Sunday, following a service at the Parish Church at 3.30 p.m. ]
Funeral arrangements are in the hands of Millwood and Son, 105, Main Street and 24, Market Street, Mexborough.
