Legion Plot
A plot of land near Doncaster Road, which brings in a revenue of 50s. per year, is keeping Conisbrough British Legion branch (men’s section) in existence. This was said at the annual branch meeting on Thursday when a small gathering resolved to make every effort to attract many younger members.
This week Mr. W. R. Jones, secretary, told the South Yorkshire Times:—
“At present we have 76 paid up members, only a minority of whom take part in Legion affairs. The lack of activity means that virtually our only two sources of revenue are subscriptions—38s. a year—and land at the Mill Dam site, which brings in 50s.”
Younger Element
Mr. Jones says:
“We have no expenses in the Conisbrough branch, but were it not for that small strip of land we would not be able to keep going. At the moment the branch is going through a very difficult period.
Eight is the average attendance at our monthly meeting. There must be hundreds of ex-servicemen in Conisbrough and Denaby, and we are hoping that they will show an interest. It is the younger element we are hoping to attract.
The functions of the Legion, and other similar organisations, are by no means at an end. We provide a very valuable service, particularly in benevolent grants.”
