Lively doings at Conisbrough
Robert Ramshaw, collier of Conisbrough, was charged by Jos Thomson with doing damage to a lamp at Conisbrough on the 20th inst.
He was also charged with assaulting Annie Elizabeth Mills, at the same time and place. John Edwards was also charged with an assault on Annie Elizabeth Mills. Then Annie Elizabeth Mills was charged with assaulting Jane Ramshaw.
The chairman and the Bench would hear the whole of the cases together.
Annie Elizabeth Mills was the first witness. She deposed that on the date in question she was upon a neighbour’s doorstep when Robert Ramshaw came to where she was and struck her. After that she went to her own doorstep when Edwards came up and said “I will strike you, to,” and did so. Subsequently Jane Ramshaw entered the house and commenced to beat her. Robert Ramshaw also came from his own house (in his shirt sleeves) got complainant down on the sofa, and nearly strangled her.
George Thompson said that the last witness was his housekeeper. At the time when all this took place he was at work, but on returning he found the house in confusion, damage having been done to a number of ornaments and other things in the house to the tune of £1 15 5d.
Jane Ramshaw said her brother-in-law was in the house at the time and sent one of the boys for three gills of ale. When he got opposite to Annie Elizabeth Mills house she called her some foul names, and use very obscene language. She went across and asked her if ever she or her boy had done anything to her, and she said no. Then witness said, “I will try and make you pay, and see how that will do.”
Mills then greatly insulted her, tore her dress (produced) which she remarked cost 4/11, and then smothered a new apron with blood. After that she took up a clothes line and pummelled witness with it.
Several witnesses have spoken to the assault by Mrs Mills, the Chairman said that in the first case he had no doubt a serious assault had been committed on Mrs Mills, but as the cost where heavy the Bench would not inflict a every penalty. For the assault Robert Ramshaw would have to pay 20 shillings and the costs, 16/2 or 14 days. In the case of the damage he would have to pay 12/2, the costs and £1 15s, the amount of the damage.
Edwards would be fined 10 shillings and costs, 16/2, the assault in this case been a minor one, or 14 days
The last case would be dismissed.
