In Pursuit of Game.

Samuel .Bailey, collier, Mexbro’ — an old offender — was mulcted in 40s. and 13s. 6d. costs for a game trespass on land of Mr. Jas. Montagu, at Melton.

Doncaster West Riding Police Court

William Speight, glassblower, Mexbro’, was charged with having used threats to Margaret Hogan, at Mexbro’, but after the evidence had been given the case was dismissed.

Ann Roche, of Denaby, was charged with having assaulted Annie Marrion of Conisbro’. The complainant stated that she was threatened, her dress was torn, and one of the windows was broken.

The evidence showed that both parties were equally to blame, and the case was dismissed.

On Saturday, at Doncaster Police Court, Wm. Lewis, Sen., was charged with having assaulted George Singleton, and also used threats to him. Mr. Baddiley appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Hall for the defendant.

The complainant stated that he went in danger of his life. One night recently the defendant accosted the complainant, seized him by the throat, as alleged, threatened to drag it out, and his brother threatened to split his head open.

The complainant said he had given no provocation, and was surprised at such conduct.

Cross-examined, the complainant denied that he said he would fight the defendant for half a “quid,” he did not believe in fighting, and had never fought in his life. (Laughter.)

Mr. Hall : Of course not. “You are such good ” men when you get into tbe box. (Laughter.)

One of the witnesses for the defence said she had been assaulted, and was injured for life. She was instituting proceedings in the County Court.

In reply to Mr. Baddiley ; she acknowledged that it was not the complainant who assaulted her.

A number of witnesses were called on both sides, and eventually the case was dismissed.

A Traction Engine Accident at Denaby

On Saturday afternoon a boy about eight years old, son of Benjn. Ward, collier, of Denaby, was knocked down and severely injured by a traction engine. The little sufferer was conveyed to the Doncaster Infirmary.

Yesterday, the Mexbro’ United Brass Band processioned to the Parish Church, attired in their uniform. At the church they played the ” Hallelujah Chorus.”
