Wombwell Main v Denaby.
An Exciting Match.
What proved to be an exciting game took place on the Wombwell Main ground on Saturday, when home team entertained last year’s champions, Denaby and Cadebv Main. It was.generally thought that a very good game would be witnessed, and the number of spectator, who gathered together were not disappointed, the home team just winning by eight runs. The wicket was all in favour of the bowlers, and consequently only small scores were made.
The visitors batted first, but they only made 45, W. Moore, the captain, being the only double figureist, with 13 to his credit. No less than three batsmen, viz., G. L. Robinson, A. Robinson, and W Shore made seven each. F. Turner had 6 wickets for 13 runs, and Thomas four for 30.
The home team opened out badly, one wicket being down for no runs, but the second wicket made a bit of a stand, putting 17 on. Eight wickets were down for 30, and there were prospects of an exciting finish.G. L. Robinson had the batsmen in difficulties on many occasions, making the ball break both ways, and he had hard lines in not obtaining more wickets. S. Thomas and L. Holmes carried the score to 51, eand two runs later the side were out, just winning. Thomas was not out 9, trio he was very lucky indeed, snicking several through the dips. Luther Robinson had 7 wickets for 24, and A. Robinson three for 24.
Wath Athletic v. Mitchell Main.
Played at Wath.
Irving Washington of the County team, played for Mitchell Main.
The catch by which Stanley dismissed Silverwood was worthy of mention, he rolling over with the ball in his bands.
Harley, for Wath, took six wickets for 29 runs.
White Lane v. Mexboro’.
Owing to the Mate of the ground at White Lane, the match was abandoned.
Mitchell Main v. Conisboro’.
A Short Game.
A very one-sided game was witnessed on the Mitchell Main mound on Saturday, when the wooden of the League met the home team.
Although Mitchells had two teams out in the doing duty for them in the Mexboro’ League, there was a very strong team to meet Conisboro’, and as a result they were easily defeated.
There was fast scoring, and the match was over by just after four o’clock; I should think that constitutes a record; at any rate in the Mexboro League.
The hems team won the tom and sent Conisboro’ in, and George Hardy and A. Bilbrough were the pair of batsmen, to the bowling of Senior and Jagger. The wicket was all in favour of the bowler, and Senior especially bowled well. There was only batsman on the visitor’s side who made anything of a stand, and that was Jack Day, who made 17, and he was the only batsman to reach double figures. G. Hardy made 9, and the pro. J. Foster, 7, but that was all. It is true they had a poor team, but the tail end fell off remarkably, and none of the batsmen could stand up against Senior, whom bowling was very deadly, taking seven wickets for 11. R. Needham took two for six. Altogether the innings totalled 49, and the runs were made in 45 minutes.
W. Robinson and E. Russell started the Mitchell Main innings, the former being in form. He hit the bowling all over the field, and compiled a capital 43 not out, not giving a chance. Russell was caught by Bilbrough off Day’s bowling, when he bad made 15, whilst. Seth Kilner was out for none. J. Needham was not out none. The total reached 59 for two wickets, the home team winning in ridiculous fashion.
