Obituary – Walter Edward Saxton
A well-known local trade unionist Mr. Walter Edward Saxton, of Wellgate, Conisbrough, died on Sunday, aged 52.
A former member of the committee at Cadeby Y.M.A. branch, Mr. Saxton had been a checkweighman at Cadeby Main Col for 13 years, prior to that had been secretary to the Checkweigh Fund for over 7 years. He was secretary of the Cadeby Main General Purposes Fund for nearly 20 years and was a member of the Home Coal Carting Committee.
On several occasions he fought elections in the East Ward and North Ward but did not succeed in entering the Council Chamber.
In his younger days Mr. Saxton was an athlete of distinction, and such were his abilities as a sprinter that he became known locally as “The Greyhound.” He had many good records to his credit and on one occasion beat J. W. Fenoughty solicitor, of Rotherham. at Maltby in a 100 yards race after the latter had just won the Northern Counties Championship
The funeral took place at Conisbrough yesterday. Mourners were: Mrs, Saxton (widow), Miss Lilian Saxton. Mr. F. Saxton. Mr. and Mrs. J. Saxton, Mr. and Mrs. H. Saxton, Mr. and Mrs. Allott, and many other relatives and friends. Floral tributes were from: family; relatives; friends; Cadeby Main Y.M.A. branch; Cadeby Main Checkweigh Fund; Cadeby Main General Purposes Fund; Home , Coal Carting Committee; and the British Legion.
Mr. E. Downing, Station Road, Conisbrough, was responsible for the funeral arrangements.
