Mail Driver and His Horse.
At Doncaster West Court on Saturday, Fred Waring, postman and carting contractor, was summoned for working horse whilst in an unfit state at Denaby on the 6th jnst.
P.-c. Metcalfe told how he observed the horse, which was in charge of a boy named Hargreaves, to be suffering pain. On examination he found two sores under the saddle, one about the size of a five-shilling piece, and the other about as big as shilling. Blood was oozing from both. The horse, which was an old one, was in very weak condition, its legs were swollen, and it walked about stiffly.
Defendant said he had since sold the horse to be killed. There could not have been much the matter with it, as for three weeks he had used it carrying mails between Thurnscoe and Mexborough.
A fine of 40s., including costs, was imposed.
