George Chadfield (33), miner, of Denaby, was sent to prison for six month’s at Doncaster, yesterday, for embezzling £lO6 19s. 11d. belonging to Denaby Main Colliery checkweigh fund, of which he was treasurer.

Man Who Embezzled Checkweigh Money

Doncaster magistrates yesterday sent George Chatdfield (33), miner, of Denaby, to prison for six months on a charge of embezzling £106 19s 11d. of the a local cheque way fun.

Chadfield’s position, said Mr. George S. Ward, defending, was due more to mismanagement and inability rather than to any criminal intent. He had not gambled or wasted the money.

Mr. SDunn, prosecuting, said Chadfield was appointed treasurer in 1935, and his salary was a year. paJd quarterly. Everything appeared to have gone all right until August, when he produced over £70 in catch.

One member queried his possession of so much loose cash, and Chadfield agreed to bank it with the exception of small amount for expenses.

To the consternation of the secretary, just before the half-yearly meeting in January, the bank pass book showed only two payments.

It was to the credit of Chadfield. said Mr. Dunn, that as soon the deficit was found he returned the books good condition. Mr. Ward said Chadfield handled some £900 every half-year, and had had considerable worry and anxiety
