Worksop Beaten in Tough Game.

Lilley´s Flashing Pate.

Denaby United 1 Worksop Town 0

Denaby United managed to pull off their home match with Worksop Town, one of the strongest and most attractive sides in the Midland league. Though the margin was narrow it was clear and Denaby were value for their victory, though Worksop played below form.

The Worksop officials consider that they have the best side they have assembled since 1908, when this first fought their way into the Competition Proper of the English Cup, and that their forward line is distinctly superior to that of last year when they made history by drawing with Tottenham in London. It must be confessed that this was not obvious to the spectators at Denaby on Saturday, except in flashes, though, no doubt on their day, Worksop are very good side. Indeed, and Denaby are fully entitled to credit for beating them any day.

Denaby, were strengthened by the inclusion of Shaw, Chambers and Jackson and there was altogether more cohesion and firmness about the team, though this did not lead to goals, and there was still palpable weakness in finishing. Indeed, Worksop were indebted for their defeat when all club may, Lilley, who reappeared after being dormant for two or three months, and took the place of Picknett at inside right, scoring the only goal of the match. Another interesting feature was a trial given to Albert Johnson, a sturdy left halfback in the Broxholme club, Birmingham League. Johnson is 22 years of age, and of useful build. He gave a very satisfactory display in this match, and a good chance of a permanent place in the Denaby team. It was from his initiative that the deciding goal came.

Worksop had rather the best of the first-half. Winning the toss they accepted the assistance of a lively breeze, reinforced in turn by rain and sun, and in the first quarter of an hour the Denaby defenders had an anxious time. They had a particularly lucky escape from a low cross shot by Tremelling which beat Bromage and travelled across the goalmouth with Cawley well up , but under the illusion that the ball was going to pass in off the post.
