March Street & Holywell Lane Repair

August 1920

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Saturday 07 August 1920

The footpath leading from March Street to Holywell Lane is very badly in need of repair. Some years ago an attempt was made to improve it by placing on the surface loads of ashes. The slope. however, is so steep that heavy rains carry along the smaller material and the clinkers in time disappear, probably into the adjoining held or gardens.

The most effective method of dealing with it would be putting on a good layer of ashphalt. This, however, unless the right kinds of small stones are used in the mixture, makes a very slippery surface and would be quite dangerous on such a slope.

Besides, it is so expensive now-a-days as make its use almost impossible. The path, however, really should have something done to it.
