Mrs K. Jackson, of Wath, has made a donation of £20, which is much appreciated for the purchase of a new theatre trolley for the Montagu Hospital.
A water rats of 11 per cent. on gross estimated values was adopted by the Dearne Valley Water Board on Wednesday night. This means “no change.”
The Executive Committee of the Mineworkers’ Federation of Great Britain are to discuss the question of miners’ wages at a meeting in London on May 22nd.
At the annual meeting of the Dearne Valley Water Board at Wombwell on Wednesday night, Mr. J. Potts, J.P., Great Houghton, was re-elected Chairman, with Ald. G. Probert, J.P., vice-chairman.
William Balmforth, 2, Willow Street, Conisbrough, a pupil at Mexborough Secondary School, has been awarded a Glass Research Delegacy Scholarship tenable at Sheffield University.
Mr. Tom Williams, M.P. for Don Valley and Joint Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, has returned from Buxton after three months treatment, His many friends will be pleased to hear that he is now much better and hopes to resume at once his political activities.
Mr. D. R. Grenfell was at Manvers Main on Friday for the opening of a pithead canteen and solarium.
Montagu Hospital subscribers will be interested to learn of the recent marriage of a House Surgeon at the Hospital, Dr. Helena Taylor, M. B., Ch.B., to Dr. J. R. Laukner, M. B., Ch.B., son of the Rev. and Mrs. J. E. Laukner of Bere Alston. Dr. Taylor is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Taylor, of Fife. Scotland, and the marriage took place in Devon. Dr. Taylor was trained at Edinburgh University and has been at the Hospital for about nine months. Her husband hopes to join the British Red Cross in China in the near future. Dr. Taylor intends to carry on with her work for the duration of the war.
In a recent air raid a fire from one building was rapidly spreading along a connecting passage to another building. Stirrup pump and water buckets were to hand; but this stirrup Pump was found to be useless — the rubber had deteriorated at the hose connection—and at the first stroke of the pump the hose fell away. Fortunately, this fire was got under control by other means, but here is a lesson everyone should take to heart. The Regional Commissioner for the North Eastern Region accordingly appeals to occupiers of business premises, organisers of fire prevention schemes and private individuals to keep their equipment under regular examination.
Yorkshire has contributed two towards a total of 68 convictions obtained In April, 1942, by the R.S.P.C.A. for cruelty to animals. This total shows a decrease of 24, compared with the number of 92 convictions during March and also compares favourably with the number of 74 for April, 1941.
Mexborough and District Rotary Club have received letters of thanks from three Mexborough prisoners of war, Leonard Green. Charles Deakin and Raymond Venables for Red Cross parcels sent on behalf of the club.
The funeral took place at Mexborough on Monday of Mr. and Mrs. J. Armstrong, of Mexborough, who died last week within three days of each other. Mr. Armstrong, who was 73, died on May 6th, and his wife, who was 69, on May 9th.
Beginning on Monday the new food ration books will be issued and the new clothes ration book, which can be used from June 1st will be available. The new food ration books will come into use on July 1st, before which date people will be asked to register again with retailers and they will be free to where they choose.
Wing – Commander Robert Edward Sharp, of Conisbrough, was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross by the King at a recent investiture at Buckingham Palace. Wing- Commander Sharp, who was accompanied to the Palace by his wife and his father, Mr. H. H. Sharp, has carried out many bombing flights over Germany, one of these including a daring low level attack on Berlin.
Two members of the staff of the Mexborough Secondary School are to leave in the near future to take up other appointments. Miss M. Telford, who has been at the school four years, is to become English mistress at Hinckley Grammar School, Leicester, and Mr. F. A. Purdie, who has been at the Secondary School just over four months, has been appointed senior physics master at Rochdale Grammar School.
