Mexborough Holidays at Home Week is to be held from July 31st to August 7th and proceeds are to be divided among local charities.
A letter from the Ministry of Works read on Monday at Rotherham Rural Council meeting, said that it was proposed to requisition a site near Hoober Hall for extracting coal by open-cast mining.
During February 511 persons were killed on the roads of Britain as against 510 in February of last year, and 229 of these fatal accidents occurred during the hours of darkness and 282 during day time. The total number of injured was 9,096; of these 2,479 were seriously injured.
It was stated at Mexborough Education Sub-Committee meeting on Monday that for the first time schools in Mexborough headed attendance returns in the West Riding in February, Mexborough’s average attendance of 85.11 per cent. compared with 82.12 per cent. for the rest of the country.
Output of saleable coal in the four weeks ended March 20th averaged 4,013,700 tons per week compared with 4,016,400 tons in the previous four weeks. Weekly average for the corresponding period in March, 1942, was 4,074,600 tons. District percentages of standard tonnage include: South Yorkshire 95.1, West Yorkshire 92.7.
The question of allowing young men who work at pit tops to choose between working underground and joining the Forces, was raised in the House of Commons on Tuesday by Ald. W. Dobbie, M.P. for Rotherham. Mr. Lloyd George, Minister of Fuel and Power, said he was not prepared to suggest that such choice should be allowed.
The Yorkshire County Cricket Club have arranged for the coaching of public schoolboys and young cricketers (14-18 years) under George Hirst, assisted by Alec Wormald, at the Leeds University cricket ground on April 20th, 21st, 22nd, 27th, 28th and 29th, starting at 1.30 each day. Those who wish to take advantage of these facilities should send in their names not later than April 11th to Mr. L. Walker, Yorkshire C.C.C., Old Bank Chambers, 9, Park Row, Leeds. The Yorkshire team decided that Hirst and Wormald shall visit various grounds in Yorkshire to coach schoolboys and young players during June and July.
A flag day at Goldthorpe last week-end organised by Mr. G. E. Salisbury, realised £63 for the Montagu Hospital.
The annual meeting of the Manvers Main Sports Club will be held on Wednesday, April 28th, 1943, in the club lounge.
The death occurred on Monday, of Chapelstown’s oldest resident, Mr. Moses Soar. He would have celebrated his 95th birthday on April 25th.
An interested member of the audience at the annual choral and orchestral concert of Mexborough Secondary School on Wednesday was Mr. T. W. Ireland, former headmaster of the school.
Mrs. Baker, of Gainsborough, who has this week celebrated her hundredth birthday, is the widow of Mr. J. G. Baker, who was headmaster of what is now known as the Fitzwilliam Council School, Swinton, from 1871-1896.
Mr. J. A. Harrison, Sub-Controller of the Don Valley A.R.P. organisation since its inception, who is leaving to take up a responsible post in the North Riding of Yorkshire, will receive a presentation at Doncaster to-night (Friday).
William Fudge, one of the three miners rescued after the Barnburgh Main disaster last April, was on Wednesday admitted to Mexborough Montagu Hospital suffering from a fractured collar bone sustained when he was partially buried by a fall of coal at Barnburgh Main Colliery.

Six member of the Yorkshire County cricket team, Herbert Sutcliffe, Len Hutton, Maurice Leyland, Arthur Wood, Ellis Robinson and Cyril Turner, together with Lery Constantine and E. A. Martindale, the famous West Indian, W. Keeton and W. J. Postlethwaite have promised to play in the Mexborough Charity match on Easter Monday, June 21st, the whole proceeds of which are for the Montagu Hospital.
Several Swinton enthusiasts are keen on emulating Mexborough’s success in promoting a charity cricket match the week Monday, July 5th, as the date of their match. The proceeds of this match are for police and other charities to be named later. The Chief Constable of the West Riding, Mr. G. C. Vaughan, and Mr. Colin Ward, J.P., of Swinton, are interesting themselves in the fixture.
A national association of Retail Butchers’ Buying Groups has been formed at a meeting at Swinton with Mr. Eric Purshouse (Rotherham) chairman, and Mr. L. Dobson (Rotherham) as acting secretary. The following buying groups have become members: Rawmarsh and Parkgate, Swinton, Rotherham County Borough, Conisborough, Wombwell, Mexborough, Wath and Dearne.
