The obituary notices in this paper last week included the following item: “on August 22 at her home, Sacriston, Durham, Mary A. Glendinning late of Mexborough and Denaby Main, passed away peacefully after a long illness.”

For 32 years Miss Glendinning was engaged on the teaching staff of the Denaby Main School and she is affectionately remembered by all with whom she came into contact. She taught when the school was held in the old Salvation Army barracks, and later in the first school in Rossington Street (now burned down) before she was transferred to the large Hall when it was opened.

She had a way with her in dealing with the girls and won the respect, admiration and love of the girls she taught. She lived nearly 30 years in Mexborough, and she and Miss Rimington (the present headmistress of the girls school) became devoted friends and companions. They lived together in Mexborough and Denaby until shortly before Miss Glendinning’s retirement which took place about 11 years ago.

Miss Glendinning then went to live with her widowed sister at Sacriston, Durham, and last September she suffered with the loss of the sister, a sorrow which affected her deeply. Her service to the girls of this village is a memory cherished by hundreds of old girls of Denaby School.
