Mexborough and Swinton Times, May 10
Mexborough 32 for 2 . Conisbrough 29
Conisbrough Hopelessly Beaten.
Fine bowling by Nicholson.
Charming weather prevailed at Mexborough, on Saturday, and in the opening match of the Mexborough cricket season, Conisbrough, were severely beaten.
There was a splendid gathering of spectators, who took a capital interest in the game, and cheered deserving features of the play with much enthusiasm.
Considering the brilliance of the weather it was much to be regretted that, owing to the indifferent display of the Conisbrough team, the actual play only lasted two hours, the spectators complaining bitterly that the game should be so abruptly concluded.
And they were right too, in making these complaints. The rules of the league state that the play in matches shall be extended over a period of four hours, and it was the duty of the umpires who officiated to have ordered the play to be continued after the winning hit had been made, whereas, the stumps were immediately drawn, in direct contradiction of the law of the league under which auspices the match was being played.
First wemust say a word about the wicket, it played excellently, the fast bowling of Brown and Hardy testing its efficiency, and there was scarcely a single ball which rose above the average height.
Conisbrough batted first but could only muster 29 all out with W. Nicholson taking eight wickets for 14 runs.
The task of the Mexborough batters was indeed a very light one , and eventually they won the game with eight wickets spare.
