Convincing Victory for Wath

A huddled up crowd of spectators witnessed this match on the Wath Athletic ground last Saturday, in bitterly cold weather.

Worthington, the visiting captain, won the toss and I. Greenwood and H, Foster opened the Denaby innings against the bowling of Deighton and Cyril Turner. The latter kept an exceedingly good length, and was very difficult to play, while Deighton sent down some fast deliveries, which caused the batsmen trouble.

Caution was exercised by both batsmen at first, but they both got Deighton to the boundary. When the score had reached 26, Deighton sent down a beautiful ball which removed Foster´s bails, and with the score unaltered Deighton had Worthington leg before. Greenwood got a stroke through Clarke´s legs to square let boundary, and 30 was hoisted. Luther Robinson made a single when he was dismissed by Morris, who brought off a difficult catch off Deighton, who had all three wickets to his credit at a cost of 18 runs.

Tibbles got Deighton nicely past cover-point for 4, and with only five more runs added Greenwood had his wickets spread eagled by C. Turner. He had been batting near 60 minutes for 18 (4 for 38). With Narroway and Tibbles together, runs came more freely. The score was carried to 60 by Narroway driving Turner sweetly for 4, and was then nearly caught by Deighton. Hargreaves and Adams were requisitioned and with the score at 66, the former beat Tibbles. Arthur Robinson Joined Narroway, but put up Hargreave´s first delivery to mid-off where Ross caught him.

When Shoosmith joined Narroway, the latter was making a good stand, and playing delightful cricket. Shoosmith placed Adams for 3, and later he got the same bowler to the leg boundary, sending 90up. With the score at 95 Adams claimed his wicket (leg before), after a very useful 17. Coope came in, and Deighton and C. Turner came on. Coope eventually fell to Deighton. Narroway was reaching for his 50 when Soar was also beaten by Deighton, and with the last man in and Narroway requiring a single to complete his 50, he opened his shoulders to C. Turner, missed and was bowled, the Denaby innings closing for 132. Deighton had 5 wickets for 45, Cyril Turner 2 for 32, Hargreaves 2 for 25 and Adams 1 for 22.

The Athletic opened their innings at 5.20 with T. Hargreaves and Len Cutts, the weather being now more bitterly cold than previously. They were set to face the bowling of Shoosmith and Crossley. Hargreaves despatched the former for a couple, and later hit him hard for 4. With the score at 13, Hargreaves drove the ball hard to A. Robinson – a hot handful – but the latter could not gather the ball. With the score unaltered, Len Cutts was taken behind the wicket. Irving Turner and Hargreaves brought the score to 29, when Hargreaves played on after scoring 19. Irving Turner was joined by Jack Morris. The latter opened by driving Shoosmith to the railway boundary. With the score at 38, I. Turner drove Crossley hard, and Soar in attempting to catch the ball near the pavilion boundary, had his left hand split open between the middle fingers, and Machin fielded for the injured player.

georgia,serif;font-size: 12pt;”>Morris and I. Turner now appeared well set, and Turner got Crossley smartly to the entrance boundary, and placed the same bowler through the slips for 3. With the score at 50 Arthur Robinson displaced Crossley. His first over was a maiden, and the second was productive of a single. At 58, Greenwood superseded Shoosmith. Morris got him away for a couple and drove him for a single. Runs came slowly, especially from the bowling of Robinson.

At 6.30 the score had reached 70, when I Turner drove Greenwood to the pavilion. In Robinson´s next over, however, he was well taken in the slips after contributing 34 runs by patient cricket. The partnership had produced 47 runs. Cyril Turner joined Morris, and despite bowling changes, all attempts to separate the batsmen were futile. Turner batted with confidence, and has developed more force since last season. He scored more rapidly than Morris, and when Crossley went on again he treated the left-hand bowler with contempt, and took nine from an over by Greenwood. He also drove Luther Robinson for two 4´s, and Arthur Robinson for a similar number. It was C. Turner who made the winning stroke at 7.15. It was a fine partnership. Scores:-
