May Festival

Hundreds of people watched the brilliant pageantry of the annual May possession of Denaby and Conisborough Catholics at Denaby on Sunday in honour of Our Lady.

The gay colours were matched by the gay weather, and though a procession of jubilation it lost none of its reverent character.

The procession left the school grounds for church walk and proceeded as far as the welfare junction and then returned to the church, where the statue of our Lady was crowned by the May Queen (Sheila Conway), an innovation been the sounding of the salute by the Scout buglers.

The procession was led by the Cross, carried by B. McCabe, by the accolytes, the Boy Scouts (under Scout Master T. Dolly), and the St Albans banner, the bearer of which was Miss. P. McGagh. St Alban (George Madin) in grey, followed and then the infant King and Queen (Austin Conlin and Joan Osborne). Next were the schoolchildren and the woman of the Parish and the Queens and attendants.
